(I do both, depending on what I'm doing and what library it is. Most seem to prefer keyswitching (or similar) approaches though, so I guess if I had to make some blanket recommendation, I'd suggest that as a starting point. Either will do the job - try both and see which you get along with. Metropolis Ark 1 (Orchestral Tools, Kontakt) 580.

Some like separate tracks, some like keyswitches. Some of the full orchestral libraries have more articulations, and some less. Your DAW most likely has some feature that can help with this - in Cubase, for example, you can set up logical editor presets to 'auto-legato' notes in a particular octave.īut for the most part, I think it's a matter of comfort and preference. Just make the keyswitch notes really long but non-overlapping if there's always a keyswitch note active, the correct articulation will always be triggered no matter where you start playback. Keyswitches don't inherently chase, but there's ways around that too. If you need the layers to have different timing, velocity or CC curves it's better to have them on separate tracks, but polyphonic keyswitching can handle most layering situations fine in my experience. Extensive Articulation Sets additionally offer swells, crescendos.

The OT multis also support polyphonic keyswitching so you can still layer and crossfade between articulations easily if you need to. Metropolis Ark 1 features the loudest imaginable dynamics, ranging from mf up to fff. It's cool and useful, and can't be done with the individual patches (ok, it can if you layer and crossfade things manually, but it's a lot of work). I don't have Metropolis but I have some experience with other OT libraries, and here I would point to the legato-between-any-long-notes feature in the multis as one such thing. Our projects create and sustain thousands of employment opportunities across NSW and are particularly important in supporting regional and rural communities. Sometimes the individual patches and the multis don't necessarily have the same features, so there may be other reasons for choosing one over the other. industry we are set to deliver a record 10.1 billion in works over the four year period to 2023, including critical new and upgraded facilities across metropolitan and regional NSW. The obvious downside is it's a lot of tracks and clutter - many don't like that and prefer keyswitches (or similar) for that reason alone. You never have to remember which keyswitch does what, or worry about keyswitches not chasing. I appreciate being able to see right in the arrangement view which articulations are available and which are playing at any given time. Separate midi tracks for everything does have a few advantages. Mostly a matter of preference, I would say.
