Each year Gartner creates more than 90 Hype Cycles in various technology and application (such as social software and ERP), information and IT services (cloud computing, big data) and industry (retail, life insurance) domains as a way for clients to track technology maturity and future potential. In this document, we will refer to the individual elements mapped on the Hype Cycles as "technologies," but in many cases, the Hype Cycles also position higher-level trends and ideas such as strategies, standards, management concepts, competencies and capabilities.
